Well I have just finished the first book I mentioned in my last blog so I thought I would put my thoughts down below:
Decide to Play Great Poker: A Strategy Guide to NLHE by Annie Duke and John Vorhaus
I have to say first off I absolutely loved this book! It is easy to read, easy to use and unlike a lot of books I have read it isn't a set of hard and fast rules. The book goes through a poker hand from preflop to postflop play. It looks into each area in some detail.
The preflop section is good and well written, a lot of this is common sense but it needs to be there. They talk about starting hand selection, types of players you will come across, types of games (loose, tight etc.). It is useful but anyone with a bit of poker knowledge or experience will find this section just reinforces what you already know.
The book really comes into it's own once you get to part 2 and beyond. Here the book becomes a bit of a goldmine IMO. The postflop section is without a doubt the best that I have read in a poker book to date. The authors don't give you rules to follow but explain thinking through a hand, responding to your opponents bets and what they mean and what ranges you can put them on generally. What the book does is really make you think the hand through and help you make sense of what has gone on so you can arrive at the correct plays.
All in all it is a great book and well worth buying for the post flop section alone, the advice is equally good for tourneys or cash games. It is a bargain at £5 in the Amazon kindle shop if you have a kindle, but I can't recommend it highly enough.
Well there is my review hope it makes sense to you all. For me personally this book is exactly what I needed to read. I mentioned in my previous blog I was making too many snap decisions and not making sense of hands enough. Now I am taking a step back and really thinking things through and I feel much more confident in my game. Obviously it will take time to put it all in place but in the couple of sessions or so I have played since I feel I have progressed more than the previous year playing so I feel positive at the minute. I will see how it goes and hopefully my next blog will be as positive as this one!

Taking Stock
I am writing this blog after what was the worst session of my life last Thursday, It has forced me to have a good look at my poker game. I will give a bit of background first, the trigger was against a player who until the hand in question occurred I had down as being a decent reg over around 1000 hands. I raised in the c/o with pocket 7's (standard) he flatted in the BB. flop came 2h 7h Kc, obviously i am thinking bingo here. I bet he calls and the 10c hits the turn. He donk leads this card, now quite a few draws are here so I want this pot over with so I shove it in. He calls and turns over Jh3h the 3rd heart hits the river and I lose a big pot to pretty poor play. This isn't the problem, I am happy with my play, I got it in good and he sucked out big deal. The problem was this happened to me:
This in itself wasn't the worst thing, what was bad was I went on to play for a further 2 hours and lost about 5 buy ins playing what was very possibly the worst poker of my life.
I have had a break and it is continuing for the weekend, this is to analyse my game and evaluate it honestly. What is coming out of this is a number of home truths that I have to sort out if I am ever going to become truly profitable at this wonderful game. My biggest issue though is quite fundamental, I just don't think before making decisions enough. I tend to make autopilot style decisions which are often ok but also a little thought could have brought a better outcome. I have a ton of information available with my HUD, my HEM and also the notes that I take pretty religiously. In the heat of battle though I tend to make snap decisions, I raise, I call, I fold within a couple of seconds. Yet if I am honest with myself, where you to ask me why I am making the play I am the answer would be it feels right 9/10 times. Now my aim when I begin playing again is to really think the hand through, think what hand my opponent may be carrying on with, think how strong I am do I really want a bloated pot with a middling hand etc and use the time I have available to make informed decisions as often as possible.
I am using my time off to have a read of some books that I feel will help me to improve. I have Jared Tendler's mental game of poker to read, and also Annie Duke's book Decide to play great poker. I have gone for these 2 as they are more about decision making and in Tendler's case mental game obviously. Basically my A game is ok, I can play profitably and win. I know my pot odds, my drawing odds, hand strengths etc all the basics. My big problems occur when I need to make a decission, I get check raised on a 2,5,9 rainbow flop and I have aces and all of a sudden I am like WTF i have the best hand and your raising me lets get it in. I don't stop and think what they do this with, I don't look at my HUD and think "he's got an aggression factor of 0.0000001 and he is check raising me on a dry flop, I should be cautious". I have loads of information at my fingertips and I just don't use it when it matters.
I feel that this is the direct result of the person I am in real life. For those that don't know, I am a industrial chemist by trade and had a degree in Forensic Science. This is great but I deal in absolutes, a reacts with b and gives c, in my working life this is great but for poker this is horrible. There are no absolutes, everything depends on the situation, who the opponent is, what the board looks like. For too long now I have been searching for a strategy to win at poker, I have read them all Fee's, Verneer, Harringtons books etc etc trying to find a way to play. Now for a beginner this is fine, hand charts stop you losing money and rules help but to be a really good player, I feel you need to shed these training wheels and ride alone eventually. I have started on this road I play each hand to its merits, not just because someone tells me I should raise this hand from the button. I have made a start but until I change the way I think (or don't think) during a hand I will always be break even which is what I am at the minute. All right I am a rakeback winner but I should be beating micro stakes poker by now, and if I think about things I will be.
So here are my new rules which I will be applying to my game:
1- Take time to think things through, don't make snap decisions.
2- Stop thinking about money, look at the decisions made and if they were right while reviewing sessions.
3- Don't let people's bad play tilt you, we want to make people make bad decisions, the outcome is inconsequential.
I hope this helps me to improve, I have been playing poker for over 2 years now and its about time I stopped the baby steps and started to progress. It will take a lot of effort but the basics are there I just need to think at a higher level than I do currently.

Tourney success and moving on up
Hello to anyone who is reading this, glad to have you along. I have been a little tardy with updating the blog so I thought I had better update it now and get back on the blog writing horse again.
I have had a pretty good couple of weeks so I have a bit to share. I managed my best ever tournament result on Friday 20th January when I came second in the mini primetime deepstack on PKR. There were 1066 runners so second place is pretty good. I had a 3:1 chip lead going into the heads up play but I went totally card dead and when I had a hand I was dominated (A9 v AJ on an A52 board) which crippled me and I eventually had to settle for second. I took home $650 which is pretty impressive for a $5 entry tournament.
But as anyone who reads this blog or knows me knows, cash tables are my passion and things have gone well there too. I have run at 10bb/100 at NL10 for the month over 10,000 hands and overally my play has been pretty solid. As my bankroll has built up nicely now I have decided to move back to NL25, i played my 1st session today and managed to finish 3 BI's up which is a nice start. I will post some thoughts on the standard etc in a few weeks once I have the feel back for it, it's been 10 months since I played NL25 so not sure how it has changed. I enjoyed the session though, I found it much easier to put people on hand ranges as the play is that bit better than NL10 where people are playing any 2 cards.
Also I am looking to play a couple of live tournaments this year. I have never played live in a casino so it is something I am itching to do. I have signed up to attend the PKR meet in Southend this June so that will be great and I intend to play something before that, possibly a visit to Dusk till Dawn in Nottingham to play something there so I am not a total novice come June!
I will leave you with a couple of hands that went well and I believe show the standard at NL10 that I am leaving behind.

New Year New Blog and a New Mod!
Hi to all my readers and a happy new year to you.
Been a while since I last blogged due to the Christmas period and doing things other than clicking buttons and smashing computer screens! Christmas was excellent for me this year, I ate far too much, drank way too much and generally had a fantastic time with the best friends and family a guy could ask for. The new year see's me starting a health kick as I need to lose some weight so drinking and bad foods are out for a while.
Poker wise it was a steady old December really I did ok breaking fairly even but I am working on my game in a big way at the minute. Lots of little leaks have meant a fairly break even year (well if not for rakeback lol) so I am determined to move on and improve in the year ahead. The pokerzion training course I signed up for is going really well, I like the weekly video's and articles they send out and it works for me. I also bought Poker Math that Matters by Owen Gaines which seems an excellent book. I am part through it, I will review it when I finish but it explains maths so well and easily that already it looks a great buy.
One last thing to report is that just before Christmas I was asked to be a forum moderator on the PKR forums. I have been a part of the community and regular forum poster for over 2 years now so it was an honor to be asked. It's not a taxing task, just editing posts, removing threads and generally upholding the forum rules but I enjoy it and feel it lets me give a bit back to the forums by helping to keep it a fun and vibrant place to talk poker.
Well that's it folks will try to keep a bit more regular and hopefully this year is the year I move on a level!

Day at the Tournament Tables
Well as I have said in previous posts, the grind at the micro cash tables hasn't gone so well lately. I decided yesterday that I needed a break, but being the poker degenerate that I am that doesn't mean stopping playing! Instead I fired up good old PKR and spent most of Sunday playing a few tournaments.
I started out in the little Pyramid at 11am, I managed to finish 37/325 for a $5 return on the $3.45 start. Not bad to say I was a bit rusty, I played well and felt good so decided to crack on and play a few more. I played 3 more reg tourneys for just over $1 entry with no return, but still felt I played well. The problem in the micro tournaments is the standard is horrible so you spend the latter stages of them basically shoving or folding unless you build up a big stack early doors. But they are very beatable patience is key, I hope I can take that back to the micro cash tables it's what has been letting me down lately!
So come mid afternoon it starts to get interesting, after playing PKR forum favourite Mattgr77 in a HU PLO sit and go and spanking his arse (just kidding Matt was a good game and I got the run of the cards!) I fired up the Nickel Mania rebuy and the Tiny Terminator. The terminator was the usual shove fest to try to get the bounties early doors so patience again, I managed to double up after the first break and took out a couple of bounties to get $4 back virtually paying for the $4.40 entry. I went pretty well and managed a finish of 29/302 for a $8 win in total so not bad all in all.
Things were really interesting in the Nickel Mania Rebuy where I was playing pretty solid and getting a nice run of cards early doors. I only re bought 4 times and got the add on so the tourney officially cost me $2.02. Now I don't normally play rebuys but I know you have to build a stack early on so I cracked on, waited for good cards and got it in a few times against some seriously bad shoves and managed to get to about 5th at the break with around 20,000 chips. I managed to carry on being in the top 20 throughout the tourney and made the final table. I got lucky once in the tourney, had just over 8bb with 12 left and shove the button with QK suited as a semi steal. The SB woke up with AQ and I caught a king which saved me. The same guy got his luck back on the FT tho shoving AJ into my AQ only for a straight to hit the board and a split pot!
After 4 1/2 hours I managed to bink the whole tourney for a return of $120 which is very nice from a $2 buy in! I really enjoyed playing a few tourneys for a change and its always nice to bink one, all in all after a few beers on Saturday and running into an old school friend who I haven't seen for years and a good poker day yesterday it was a cracking weekend.

Satisfying weekends work
Well I have just got to work, it's bloody freezing so I thought I would write a blog post to take my mind off it! I have had a good weekend both on and off the tables. I went to my mate at work's leaving do on Friday night in Sheffield. Bit sad to see him go but he has a good job, and we saw him off in style! Saturday was also a boozy night at one of my best friends house. Lots of beer and some weird green crap that i kept getting shoved into my hand, pretty drunk but a cracking night. I felt surprisingly well Sunday morning but my mate was laid up in bed all day, lightweight is all I can say dude!
Ok so back to my weekend on the tables, firstly I am impressed I even found the time lol but it was worth it. I managed to play around 1000 hands at NL10 on PKR and won about 3 BI's which was good going. I felt really good, I feel I have my discipline back now and I managed to grind away and get away from anything marginal which has been losing me money recently. In fact I only made one play I was annoyed with trying to catch an agro fish with a marginal hand and got stung for 50BB but apart from that it was a good couple of sessions.
I also had a stab in a donkament, playing the PLO8 $4.40 game on Sunday night. I am getting quite into PLO and PLO8 but I do better in tourneys than cash ATM as my game isn't totally great. I managed to finish 4th out of 110 runners so pretty proud of that. I could have done better but ran into a guy who was in total god mode so can't complain.
Anyway that's my weekend, I am going to figure out how to post HH on here then will try to get a few for my next post, cheers for now and thanks for reading

Hi All New blog here!
Hello this is the first post of my new blog on here. I have been keeping a blog on the forum at the poker site PKR in a thread but I decided to start on here and hopefully make it a bit interesting and hit a wider audience. I will try to post every week to blog about my poker journey as I (hopefully) move up the cash stakes on PKR. I am working hard to improve my game at the minute, I have just joined a training site (Pokerzion) and hopefully my game will improve.
